To steal a line from Alanis Morisette…’Isn’t it ironic…’

For the past five years I have been busting my butt to make the push standard for the Canadian program given that regardless of one’s talent in driving one cannot advance in the Canadian program if the push standard cannot be met. Anyone that has been following my journey is probably well versed in this knowledge.

Anyone in the know is also probably well versed in the fact that my push has been my nemesis all these years. Though not terrible I have missed the standard by 9 hundredths in previous years. And although I have talent in my driving (and thus my down times) it has been of no consequence in regards to my attaining a place in the Canadian program.

Frustrated with this fact, and knowing that I have what it takes to do well in this sport I looked at my plausible options and at the end of this past season, thanks to my eligibility to acquire the proper paperwork, I made the move to the Jamaican Federation. I now compete as a national athlete for Jamaica . In the ensuing time, in regards to everything else, it has been business as usual for me – training, training and more training in the off-season to continue to improve my push.

Despite some lingering issues with my achilles and hamstring (which in talking to other athletes seems to be a common ailment amounts sprinters and us sliders) my training has been going very well indeed. I have been posting personal bests (pbs) in my lifting, sprinting and my push. Two weeks ago I set my first new push pb beating my previous one by 5 hundredths. Last week I set another new push pb.

Now all of this is really just review of what I have recently written about. But this next bit is the interesting (read ‘ironic’) part. This past week has been the testing camp for this season’s Canadian program. As in previous years it is comprised of the push test where athletes must meet the standard, sprinting and then lifting (which the reality is it makes no difference really how they do on the sprinting and lifting… it really is all about the push). Monday was the push test day. I went for moral support and to cheer on my peers that were testing. For me of course the days of doing this testing are done. Tuesday my peers had more testing and I went to my ice house training session to work with my coach. And for the third week in a row I set a new push pb. My push now meets the Canadian standard. How very interesting (again read ironic).

The really great part in all of this is, with a push that would now be acceptable to the Canadian program (and with still having five weeks to continue to improve my push before the start of this season) combined with my already proven driving skills, means I am just that much more competitive. With my position with the Jamaican Federation I now actually have an opportunity to advance and succeed at my sport (ie: race world cup and ultimately gain a berth in the 2010 games) than if I had ever managed to make the Canadian standard (and thus the Canadian team) prior to this.

Apparently things in life really do happen for a reason.
