Race week one. Park City, Utah. Cold-ish but not heaps of snow...though our first day of sliding the wind was blowing something fierce and the rather fluffy bits of 'snow globe' snow were whirling madly and making their way into all kinds of crevasses.

For this week of training and races skeleton drew the 'short stick', as it were, and we've been training at night while the bobsled crew trains and races during the day.

Sliding starts at 18:30 and thus usually goes until about 22:00. Well, that is in total. Because there are a substantial number of athletes competing they have broken us into two training groups and so each group takes it's turn starting at 18:30 and thus being done before the end of the session at 22:00. Regardless it still makes for some pretty late nights. But this also means we get to sleep in in the morning. It also gives us the whole of the days to train at the gym/track and to relax. Not to mention shop at the outlet mall here! (read: WooHoo!)

Surprisingly, and pleasantly, it has been quite mild. And sliding at night gives the track a whole different look.

It is pure and utter blackness all around and the track itself glows on the mountain side. Such that you would almost expect to hear an angel choral "aahhh, AAHHH" as it comes into view.

As to sliding the track at night. I'm not sure that it really makes that much of a difference in the end. You'd think it would from the fact that it is blazing with football field lights (Think "Friday Night Lights")but the reality is that once in the track you are focused (as you should be) on the sliding.

Usually I am not a big fan of night sliding. Mainly for the fact that when it feels like one should be winding down with a nice cuppa and their PJ's, one needs to be packing up their stuff and heading out into the cold to get even more cold. I think the fact it has been rather mild here has been the saving grace for me.

That being the case I am keeping my fingers crossed that next week Calgary is also still complying with being mild as I do believe skeleton once again has drawn that short stick.
