Never let it be said that one is ever too 'well seasoned' to make a rookie mistake. First race of the season this evening and as of 1.5 hours ago I was disqualified from my race.

Now, you might think that it was my arrival at the start block minus my gloves that was the rookie mistake however that was simply the result of what was my actual 'rookie mistake'. In fact I would dare to suggest that no new slider would actually forget their gloves. They are too freaked out about, and too wrapped up in, all the minute details that going to the start line without a required piece of equipment/apparel would probably never happen.

No, my mistake was in changing my pre-race ritual. *GASP*!! Everyone knows you NEVER change your pre-race ritual. How moronic! And really it all seems/ed so benign when one looks at what I changed.

Music. That was it. The culprit. I thought it would be a good way to stay focused right to the start line. Listen to my ipod all the way out there until I was right on the line ready to whip off my jacket and toss on my helmet. As opposed to stopping my music a few sliders before I was on the line. Well...it kept me focused all right. On my music.

I was warmed up. Stretched. Had applied my Sportbalm* (thanks Benoit). Was paying attention to who was on the line and when I was up. ACDC was Hells Bells-ing and Thunder Struck-ing and I very calmly (and focused) made my way to the start line. Austrian slider Janine Flock was on the block. I saw her blast off. My spike covers came off. My warm up pants came off. I picked up my helmet and started to walk to the line. And just as I stepped on the block I realized I didn't have my gloves! EFF ME!@!!! I sprinted to the start house (ruining my sharp spikes as I sprinted full tilt over the concrete), threw the doors wide as I heard the tower announce 'Track is clear for Rindy Loucks', tore to my bag, ransacked it for my gloves and bolted back out to the start line...all the while none too polite curse words streaming from my mouth.

I was back on the block with 17 of my 30 seconds left on the start clock. Jacket thrown off, mouth guard jammed in...13 seconds on the clock. Helmet on and desperately trying to close the clasp as I was also trying to calm my breathing. 4 seconds on the clock. Helmet won't clasp. One second on the clock. Helmet clasps. O seconds on the clock. Game over. Race over. Disqualified. But I still did my run. Still have to enjoy the sliding!

Silver lining...because we always need to find silver linings, is that at the least this is a season that I had already decided would be one not to focus on points from races and it is not a BIG season like last year in this regard. Yes it is frustrating to make stupid mistakes and to essentially throw a race away because of it but if ever there were a season for this to happen then this is the season for it.

I've never been disqualified before so, now I've gotten that out of the way. And I think I can guarantee that that won't happen again. And hey, it isn't like this doesn't happen to even the best of them. I've just joined the club now.
