It is that time of the season. The first race week! This year the first America's Cup race, and indeed the very first FIBT race of the season out of all the circuits, is in Park City, Utah.

Park City is a lovely little ski resort town that began it's life as a silver mining community. The 'Old Town' is a simply lovely little stroll amoungst turn of the century architecture. And anyone that knows me KNOWS that I love my old buildings. And so, coming to Park City is a joy even outside of the sliding.

However...before one can get to the lovely strolls and the joy of sliding here one must endure the travel. For many of us that are already in Calgary this means driving. All 15 to 16 hours of it.

Although it is, at times, beautiful country (depending on one's taste) it really is an endeavor that one must prepare themselves for mentally. The drive is not one that any of us truly look forward to. It is long. It is generally not very entertaining (this is dependant upon your travel mates though)and there is really not much variance in the scenery.

The only things to keep you on your toes are if the weather is less than stellar, in which case the drive becomes treacherous as well as tedious, and at night one needs to be ever on the look out for deer with suicidal ideations. Both scenarious I have experienced on my multiple drives to Park City over the years.

This trip Kat, Mike and I began the journey in seperate cars and had the plan to meet up in a town in Montana. I was well behind my leaving time and thought for sure they would be waiting on me. I got to the border and, figuring that there wouldn't have been too many New Zealand skeleton athletes crossing over, I asked the border guard if they had already passed. She advised me that she wasn't allowed to tell me if someone had crossed...however I might find them inside...nudge, nudge, wink, wink. Sure enough...there they were.

For the rest of our journey we traveled convoy style. They were either in my rearview or in front leading the way. However my trusty companions within my car were the likes of Johnny Cash (appropo I thought for the terrain), Ella, Etta, Chet and those good sing alongs - ABBA and Simon & Garfunkle. Oh..com'on now....we all know you know the words to their songs! I don't care how cool you are!!

We over-nighted it in Helena, Montana at the 7-ish hour mark in our journey and did the rest the next day, making it into Park City in time for the Team Captain's meeting (the 'what to expect, here are the rules and expectations and who is in attendace for the race?' meeting). And, as they say, Let the games begin!

For those that can't envision the monotony of this drive I have included a pictoral of the journey from Calgary to Park City. Be ready for the excitement of this!:

HOUR 1 - Southern Alberta, between Calgary and Lethbridge (I think)

HOUR 7.5 - Somewhere in deepest, darkest Montana...Excitement!!!! Look, LOOK....there are bumps in the land!!!

HOUR 10 - Somewhere in Idaho (aka- It All Looks The Same Land)

HOUR 12.5 - Utah. Only 3 or so more hours to endure! Com'on Johnny...you can get me through the rest of this!

And just in case you don't get the real sense of it from the still photos.....
