...But not for you Jamaica!

The ice went on the track here in Calgary last week. It was a very exciting time. My peers have been buzzing about it. I have been reading facebook statuses about it. EVERY slider I know seems to be sliding. Except for me.

Oh sure...I've been down to the track. However the above photo depicts how I have been spending my time there. Watching. Thank goodness for the lovely weather we were having!

Now, 'why' you ask no sliding for me? Well...first off the Calgary track is pretty much completely booked out by the Canadian National programs. Between Luge, Bobsled and the differing skeleton programs there is hardly even enough time left for the beleaguered track workers to get in there to fix the carnage that the bobsledders have left behind! (A true statement and yet also an inside slider joke! Those dastardly bobsledders!)

Secondly, and more contributory however, is the fact that the Calgary track is prohibitively expensive for 'International Sliders'. Not too much of a concern I suppose if one is funded by their nation and federation however,as we know, I am not. So the 400$/hr rate or, worse, the 50$ per run (so that is an average 50$/minute!!!!) is a tad out of my financial range at the moment.

So why not go to another track to train you ask? I gladly would! And Lake Placid would be one of my top choices for the fact that they only charge 390$/season for unlimited runs. Not to mention that I am rather partial to the area as it is really quite lovely there.

However, though I will be competing this year, I have had to make the decision that this is a 'financial recoup' season. Thus, I am going to race a full season (8 races) but try to do all races where I don't need to fly anywhere and therefore spend as little money as possible. So this means staying close to 'home' (and my job) here in Calgary.

In this way I can get my sliding debt load down as much as possible (ie: work fulltime and then some) so that for the coming season(s) I can again refocus on sliding. Working fulltime is not conducive to training and sliding the way one truly needs to. Frustrating that the choice between the two needs to be made but such is the life of an unfunded national athlete. And such is the life I have chosen, for now.

And so....more days observing on the side of the track await me here. Unfortunate that the darn weather is turning! Brrrr!!!
